- Accounts and notes relating to Lopez's mercantile activities in 1764 and 1765. Such items as rigging, thread, sugar, rum, ribbon, assorted textiles, pewter tea spoons, an ornamented looking glass, clapboard nails, and twine are mentioned. Taxes and wharfage fees are also noted. Many references are made to women buying products, to Black workers, and to specific ships. Some of the accounts are noted as having been posted to books L or M. Book M is held by the Newport Historical Society. Duarte (Aaron) Lopez was born in Portugal in 1731 to a converso family. He came to America in 1752 to practice Judaism openly, taking on the name Aaron and settling in Newport, Rhode Island. In Newport, he established a variety of commercial ventures, including whaling and export of Newport manufactures, and participated in the slave trade. He helped to found Truro Synagogue and was involved in a number of philanthropies.
