- Description
- Ten sheets from a small book of designs, probably used by an English designer of enameled (or possibly japanned) wares such as small boxes and buttons. All the designs are round or oval, with one rectangle, and all are drawn in ink; none of these designs are colored, although some have colors indicated by words. All the patterns are numbered, and some are priced. Many of the designs show Chinoiserie influence, including birds, flowers, and Chinese figures and buildings. A few designs include phrases, such as "best Rappee," "fine Snuff," "Best Virginia," and "A pipe is at your Service," which would indicate the contents of the decorated box. Some of the designs celebrate the coronation of King George III and his queen Charlotte in 1761. A European woman is labeled as representing "Plenty," while another design incorporates the name Bacchus. One design shows two ships and is labeled "Britains Glory." The word "Resignation" all by itself, no ornamentation, appears in one circle. Some of the designs are more complete than others, and there are variations on some designs, especially the coronation ones. It is not known who compiled this volume, but undoubtedly the person was working in Great Britain. Pattern book; Design drawings; Enameled ware-England; Enameled ware-catalogs;
