- Description
- The front cover and seven sheets from a book of designs, probably used by an English designer of enameled or japanned wares working in the town of Bilston, Staffordshire. Several names are written on the pages: Thomas Cooper, John Lawley, Thos Bibbins, and Thomas Lawley, who is known to have been a japanner. Some of the designs are within ovals. All are colored. Most of the patterns are numbered, but none are priced. A few are pricked around the edges. The designs are varied and include a jug with a wine class (the jug decorated with a banner reading "Old October 1784," or perhaps 1781), barrels with a wine glass, wheat with a flail, a banner with a crown and the initials GR, a hunting horn, a fiddle, an insect, a dove with hearts, a ship with a trip to the Duke of Clarence [who later became King William IV], a hunting dog, 2 variants of man with a wine glass hiding behind a large barrel, an urn, a landscape, a punch bowl, and other designs. Also filed with the item are two black and white photos of the volume as it was received, one photo of the front and the other of the back. It is not known who compiled this volume, but undoubtedly he or she was working in Great Britain. Pattern book; Design drawings; Enameled ware-England; Japanned ware-England
