- Weld kept this diary from Sept. 22, 1884, to Oct. 4, 1885. She was still attending school during this time. Helen wrote about reading, listing several books that she enjoyed, playing cards and billiards, practicing, painting, visiting with friends, dancing, shopping, going to a minstrel show, visiting Harvard University, etc. In the fall of 1884, she recorded several torchlight processions, apparently connected with the upcoming presidential election. On October 29, the Belva Lockwood Cadets, a group of young men in dresses, paraded. She gave details about celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, George Washington's Birthday, and Easter. In late summer 1885, she made a trip to Maine and Campobello Island. At the end of the diary is an Introduction List, a list of men she had met, including the names of the people who made the introductions; her calling list; interesting items, including a note that her father had refused an offer to run for alderman on the Democratic ticket; lists of letters received and written; some further diary entries, which are out of chronological order; several poems; and some accounts, mostly listing the purchase of items of clothing./nWeld was a young lady, still in school, who resided in the Boston area while she was keeping this diary. She lived with her parents Aaron D. and Annie Warren Coffin Weld. Other family members, including a grandfather, lived nearby. Helen C. Weld born in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, on November 1 1869. In the diary, she mentions the deaths of her brothers Philip and Winthrop./n
