- Description
- Schoolmaster's exercise book for the study of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, navigation, mapping, and astronomy created by Earl in the 1720s. Dates with the year 1727 appear in several of the word problems. The mathematical problems draw upon standard published works of the period. Much of the text is done in calligraphy with headings in a decorative scroll. Geometric figures accompany many of the calculations. The volume features six titled watercolors, including: "The Mariner's Compass," "English Empire in America" (a map), "The Ptolomaich System," "The Copernican System," "The Tychonean System," and "The Fundamental Diagram for Astronomy" signed T.E. and dated Nov. 24, 1727. Uncolored drawings depict "The Plain Sea Chart" and "Mercators Chart." Earl was probably born in Little Compton, RI, in 1704. By 1727, he was a schoolmaster in southwestern New Jersey. On Sept. 30, 1736, Earl married Judith Bostido in Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ. He died in New Hanover township, Burlington County, NJ, on Nov. 2, 1751. Bound in original leather; written on front cover: TE's Book. The paper bears a watermark of King George II.
