- Description
- This manuscript ledger was compiled by joiner Joseph Lindsey of Marblehead, Massachusetts, beginning in 1739, and was also used by another unknown person, continuing until 1773, six years after Lindsey's death. The types of work performed and items produced by the two men are almost identical, however. Records indicate that these joiners built chests, cradles, window frames, doors, coffins, tea tables, numerous chairs, and dining and chamber tables, mostly from walnut or mahogany. They also mended furniture and other items such as cart wheels and fences. Both men worked inside ships, repairing and building the interiors, as well as spending a good deal of time surveying (grading and measuring) lumber. One page records accounts for Stanford Flack who worked for Lindsey. (Flack may have been the person who kept the later accounts.) Lindsey was a joiner from Marblehead, Massachusetts, during the mid 18th century. He was born on September 23, 1714, to Ralph and Mary Lindsey in Lynn, Massachusetts. He married Rebecah Hendley on October 11, 1739, and they had five children. In 1764, Lindsey made a will, executed upon his death in 1765, leaving his estate to his wife. However, the terms of the will were only partially fulfilled before Rebecah's death; they were fully carried out by Joseph and Rebecah's son, Capt. Nathaniel Lindsey, of Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1786. Alternate spellings of Lindsey's name include Lyndsey and Lindsay.
