- Description
- Strangman recorded his travel experiences in Canada and the United States. He sailed on the "Nova Scotian" and noted sea conditions and the sightings of whales and icebergs. The ship made stops at St. John's, Newfoundland, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. He disembarked at these ports, explored, and made sketches. On July 21, while sailing from Nova Scotia to Baltimore, a crewmember died and was buried at sea. Strangman arrived in Baltimore on July 22 and described what he saw there. On the 23d, he took a train to New York City and wrote about the countryside he passed through. On July 24, he crossed the Brooklyn Bridge; the structure impressed him favorably. On July 27, Strangman left New York for Niagara Falls, travelling up the Hudson River Valley. He then visited Montreal and Quebec before embarking on the "Peruvian" for home. Strangman also wrote comments about American hotels and railway travel in the United States./nStrangman was an Englishman, apparently from London or its environs, who traveled to America for the benefit of his health. He left family behind, probably a wife and two children, as the photo of such a family is pasted onto page 73. Strangman was an artist, although it is not known whether this was his vocation or an avocation./nThe back of the volume has a newspaper clipping about another Englishman's trip to America, made at the same time as his, printed guides to the cabin plans on the ships he used, and lists of the saloon passengers on those ships. One of the lists also includes a menu. At the front of the volume are two clippings about an illustrated lecture on his trip that Strangman gave at the Upton YMCA. The 24 watercolors include a porthole scene, a flag, several ships, an iceberg, a billy club and a hat, scenes of St. John's, Halifax, Baltimore, Niagara Falls, the Thousand Islands, Quebec, and a locomotive. This volume has been copied from the original.
