- Description
- Contains 29 mounted and one loose black and white photographs of the exterior and interior of a large neo-classical style mansion decorated in ornate Victorian style. Photos are of the entrance hall, a study, dining room, living rooms, bedrooms, and art gallery. Some of the photographs depict Widener's extensive collection of paintings, tapestries, Chinese porcelain, statuaries, and antique furniture. One photoprint laid in at front: portrait of Widener standing in gallery. The exterior views show various sides of the mansion, with views of the garden. The house was owned by P. A. B. Widener, a very wealthy businessman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started as a merchant and made money supplying the Union Army with meat. He made a fortune from his investments in public transportation, and further invested in U.S. Steel, the American Tobacco Co., and Standard Oil. Album and loose photograph both identified as from W. A. Cooper. His address on album label (inside back cover) is 106 East 23rd St., New York; on laid in photograph, 292 5th Ave., New York. In New York City directories, he is listed as William A. Cooper.
