- Records the trip taken by Kinsey and Bemans from Lowell, Massachusetts, as far west as Chicago, Illinois during the summer of 1850. The two left Lowell on June 26 and headed for Philadelphia, where Kinsey visited his family. They then traveled through Baltimore and stopped next in Washington, D.C. Kinsey sat in the Senate gallery and noted what he saw. As the two traveled through mid-western cities, Kinsey commented on the people and scenery. On the return trip, Kinsey and Bemans journeyed along the Great Lakes to New York State and then New England, stopping at Niagara Falls./nJohn Kinsey was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his parents were Quakers. By 1850, he was employed by the Lowell Machine Shop in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1850, Kinsey and W. B. Bemans took a six week trip through the western United States./n
