- Description
- This unidentified recipe book was probably compiled by a Pennsylvania German woman during the late 18th or early 19th century. It primarily contains recipes for such baked goods as cakes, pies, and cookies, including "Reading Cakes," "Jackson Jumbles," and "New York Biscuit." Among other entries are recipes for quince and cherry cordials, ketchup, and such household and medicinal recipes as white wash, yellow wash, lamp oil, and a cure for "swelling of the body." Also included are a newspaper clipping in German, possibly from "Der Reading Adler," a Pennsylvania German newspaper published in Reading, Penn., and four tombstone inscriptions (no names given), one in English and three in German. Detached gatherings; no covers; detached pages; frayed edges; slight staining; some moderate discoloration; one inclusion.
