- Contains recipes for cooking, medicinal cures, and household receipts. Cookery recipes include directions for making puddings, beers, cakes, pickles, pickled oysters, vinegars, syrups, and mustards; as well, there are instructions for curing meats. Medicinal cures for sprains and coughs are noted. Also included are recipes for cold cream and yellow wash. Some recipes are attributed to specific people, including one from Dr. Physick of Philadelphia. The recipes are recorded in different hands. Several items are laid inside the front cover. A partial index appears on the front fly-leaf. Written inside front cover: "Recipe book belonging to Jane D. L. Kane, & sent to her grand-daughter & only namesake by her aunt E.D. Kane some years after her marriage. Jean Kane Foulke, Jean Kane Foulke du Pont, 1933." Jean Kane Foulke (born 1891) married Eleuthere Paul du Pont (born 1887) on June 9, 1910. Leiper married John Kintzing Kane (1795-1834) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Elisha and Alida Van Rensselaer Kane. John Kane was a lawyer and politician, and was appointed to a federal judgeship by James K. Polk. Jane and John had seven children: Elisha Kent (1720-1857), Thomas Leiper (1822-1883), John Kent (died young), Robert Patterson ("Pat," 1827-1906), Elizabeth ("Bessie," 1830-1869), John Kinzing, Jr. (1833-1886), and William Leiper (1838-1852). Quarter calf leather binding; worn marbled paper boards; some staining; missing pages. Most of the pages are blank. Blank pages not scanned. Kane family papers are held by the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan.
