- Description
- Contains 80 numbered leaves of watercolor paintings, apparently done as student exercises. The paintings seem to have been completed for various purposes: wall decoration, painted furniture, signs; some obviously created as motifs for chair backs. Most are duplicated on the same leaf, some only as far as a preliminary pencil sketch copy. Also included is an 1821 document pertaining to Nestell's debt signed by his creditors. It states that because of Christian Nestell's misforturne, his creditors agreed to relingish him of his outstanding debts; a note written and signed by Peter Lorilard free Nestell from all monies owed to Lorilard, except for his mortgage. Leaves 66 and 69 are missing. Nestell (1792/3-1880) was born in New York, probably the son of Christian I. Nestell. He would have been 18 or 19 years old at the time of his second quarter of drawing instruction as noted on leaf 15 of this volume. He was a resident of Providence, RI by 1820 when he rented shop space from the cabinetmakers Daniel and Samuel Proud, and began his long association with Freemasonry. Nestell is described in Rugg's History of Freemasonry in Rhode Island (1895) as an ornamental sign painter and gilder, although he advertised chairs for sale during the 1820s. From 1837 to 1844, city directories record him as a bank clerk, and after 1850 do not list an occupation for him (although a Christian B. Nestell, presumably his son, is listed starting at that time as a cabinetmaker in Providence). Watercolor painting, American-New York (State); Art-Study and teaching; Sketchbooks; Furniture painting; Flowers in art; Plants in art; Animals in art
