- A diary of art student Lichtenauer while studying in Paris, covering October 13, 1897-April 10, 1898. He began his time in Paris studying at the Academie Julian and recorded his studies and meetings with other art students and artists, including setting up a studio with two friends; his social activities (teas, dinners, dancing, music and theater performances, including a night at the Folies Bergere); bicycling in the Bois de Boulogne; reading Marcus Aurelius; etc. They arranged to have William Turner Dannat critique their work. Important world events on which Lichtenauer offered many comments were the Dreyfus affair, Emile Zola's publication of the letter "J'Accuse" and his subsequent trial; and the deterioration of relations between the U.S. and Spain after the U.S.S. Maine blew up in Havana Harbor./nLichtenauer, Jr. was an artist. He was born in New York in 1876, the son of Rebecca Deutsch and Joseph M. Lichtenauer, an investment advisor. The budding artist studied at the Art Students League of New York City and at the Academie Julian in Paris. As an artist, he was based in New York City. He was a member of the National Society of Mural Painters and the Salmagundi Club. He received several art awards; his works are owned by the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He painted decorations in the Schubert Theater in New York./nMounted on the title page of the diary is a photograph of Lichtenauer with his friends August Gerdes and Arthur Freedlander; the three shared a studio together.
