- Description
- Volume of tattoo patterns, containing 27 drawings of a sentimental or patriotic nature, depicting pride of country (mostly in the U.S.A., but one design features an Irish harp), religious devotion (designs with crosses), love (sailor embracing his wife or girlfriend), friendship, and sailing ships. The motifs--and the red and blue coloring--indicate that these drawings served as patterns for an unknown tattoo artist. First page contains formula for dyes; last page, a list of "Bursting Charges" (for shrapnell, cannon, etc.). It has been suggested that the volume dates to 1853-1860 and may have belonged to a New York City tattoo artist. Martin Hildebrant and Ned Thomas were two tattoo artists in the city at that time. In 1881, Hildebrant said he had had a design book which had been stolen from him, but it is not known if this volume belonged to him.
