In tandem with Ithiel Town beginning in 1829, he designed a remarkable number of buildings, public structures (hospitals, school buildings, churches, museums, state capitols) and private dwellings alike. Davis embarked on a solo career in 1843, continuing in practice alone for more than 30 years. At one point in his life, Davis claimed to have designed the most buildings of any living American architect. He is best known for Gothic revival designs.
