- Description
- Photos show two exterior shots (front and rear views) and 18 interior shots of the dining room, bedrooms, living rooms, entrance hall, and a long hallway used for the display of art. The photos show furniture, light fixtures, a telephone, decorative objects, wallpaper, textiles (pillows, bedspreads, table cloths, curtains, rugs), and art work. Emily K. Rieck of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, operated brothels and gambling establishments in Chicago and Glen Ellyn. Venusberg was her guest house in Glen Ellyn, where clients, many of them prominent men, from Chicago were able to stay. Madame Rieck was born around 1850 in Hamburg, Germany. She came to the United States in 1868, married Charles Rieck, and had five children. Charles died in 1902 and Emily in 1929. House no longer stands. Inscription inside front cover reads: Photographs by Addicks. Dueringer Studio Elgin Ill. However, all photographs are stamped: W.A. Dueringer Elgin Ill.
