Henry Martyn Boies House Drawings
Four unsigned architectural drawings for a high Victorian-style house designed for Henry M. Boies, including front and two side elevations, and a drawing labeled Library, depicting a large window flanked by bookcases. Although these are finished drawings, with measurements of windows and doors indicated, and variations in the bookcases, they were apparently preliminary drawings, as they do not match the house shown in photos of the Boies residence, Breezymont, on Clay Street in Scranton, Penn.
Henry Martyn Boies was a manufacturer in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1837 in Massachusetts, the son of Joseph and Electa Laflin Boies. The family moved to Saugerties, New York, when Henry was a boy. He graduated from Yale University in 1859. He worked for his father's gunpowder business, Laflin, Boies & Turck, and business for that company took him to Scranton, Penn., in 1865. There, he began his own gunpowder business, Moosic Powder Co., and he invented and manufactured a better railroad car wheel. He was active in civic and Presbyterian Church affairs. He also wrote about penal reform. He married twice and had several children. He liked to travel, and filled his home with souvenirs. He died in 1903 as he was returning to Scranton from a visit to Washington, D.C.
