Massachusetts State Capitol Lithographs
Sixteen lithographs depicting plans for the enlargement of the Massachusetts State Capitol Building, designed by architect Gridley James Fox Bryant. Lithographed by J.H. Bufford, these illustrations feature longitudinal and transverse sections, plans for the cellar, and floor plans for the three story building, and list key building commissioners including Charles H. Warren, Adam W. Thaxter, Jr., and Samuel K. Hutchinson.
Designed by Charles Bulfinch, the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State Capitol building (State House) was laid on July 4, 1795, in a ceremony that included Paul Revere. The first addition to the original State House, made in 1831, was designed by Isaiah Rogers. A second addition, designed by Gridley James Fox Bryant and constructed between 1853-1856, completely enclosed the 1831 addition. This second addition provided room for a state library and for other state government offices. Both of the earlier additions were removed during the construction of the third addition (1889-1895).
