Charles Magnus Collection
Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a lithographer, publisher, mapmaker, bookseller, and stationer working in New York City from 1850-1899. Born in Elberfeld, Germany, he immigrated to America in 1848 and learned the printing business from his older brother.
Magnus' early work includes pictorial letter sheets illustrated with city views and maps. During the Civil War, he produced more than 700 patriotic envelopes, over 300 illustrated song sheets, and cards with pictures of officers and government officials. He later expanded his work to include prints, board games, reward of merit cards, and advertising and custom printing. Winterthur's Magnus collection includes examples of all of these items.
