Robert Jocelyn Dinner Book
Robert Jocelyn was the first Viscount Jocelyn and served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He was born and died in England but also lived and worked in Ireland and his titles were in the Anglo-Irish peerage. He was the son of Anne Bray and Thomas Jocelyn of Sawbridgeworth. Internal evidence suggests that this volume is from his household. Jocelyn's only son Robert (1731-1797) was created Earl of Roden. He had country residences at Dundalk in County Louth and Tollymore in County Down.
Consists of detailed daily dinner records in the form of diagrams of tables with the various dishes set out on each, kept from Oct. 30, 1740 to Nov. 5, 1751, with sporadic later entries. The average dinner consisted of two courses, involving two table plans for each meal. Several more elaborate meals, generally ball suppers, are also represented. When guests were present names are noted beside the illustrations. Most of the listed guests were men, but sometimes the names of women appear.
