Winterthur House Room Files
This collection of files documenting the rooms and spaces in the museum are housed in the Winterthur Archives. Rooms and spaces can have more than one file. Files may exist for rooms no longer in existence.
While all files are commonly referred to as Room Files, there are three different types, each with its own history:
Room Files were created in the 1990s by the archivist as a way to assemble information scattered amongst various record groups in the Archives. Any material found was then photocopied and gathered into one file for each room or original house. These files also contain lists of photographs and drawings as well as information about the original houses from which the woodwork or the rooms came.
Guides Files were compiled by museum staff as quick reference tools for the guides. They were previously housed in notebooks near the Education Office on the 5th floor in the Wing.
Defunct Room Files, originally in binders placed in the rooms, were later transferred to the Archives when the notebooks were updated.
