Keyboard shortcuts can be used to navigate aspects of this site without a mouse or cursor.


When viewing a object, select or tab into the image viewer and use the following controls to manipulate the image.


  • Move up: w or [up arrow]
  • Move down: s or [down arrow]
  • Move left: a or [left arrow]
  • Move right: d or [right arrow]
  • Return to centre: 0
  • Zoom in: = or [shift] + w or [shift] + [up arrow]
  • Zoom out: - or [shift] + s or [shift] + [down arrow]
  • Rotate clockwise: r
  • Rotate counterclockwise: R
  • Flip horizontally: f

    Advertising Ephemera

    Advertisements, ca. 1740 - ca. 1940

    Most of these advertisements come from 19th century New England and the Middle Atlantic States.

    Convertible furniture trade cards, [ca.1875 - ca.1895]

    Trade cards for convertible furniture, most of which depict furniture that could be transformed into beds.

    Japanesque trade cards, ca.1875 - ca.1895

    Consists of 160 trade cards showing Japanese influences in their design.

    Poster stamps

    Poster stamps were affixed to envelopes, invoices, packages, and correspondence to advertise products, promote events, champion the quality of life in a particular area, announce exhibitions, publicize sporting events, and more.

    Silver ephemera collection

    Part of a larger collection, these trade cards advertise silversmiths, watchmakers, and jewelers.

    Trade cards and labels collection, ca. 1734 - ca. 1932

    This artificial and still open collection contains thousands of trade cards and labels that advertise a variety of products, including house furnishings, toys and games, jewelry, horse equipage, gas appliances and more.

    Trade cards, [ca.1890]

    Consists of forty-one cards that depict different kinds of furniture and other domestic objects that could be painted with enamels.

    Trade cards, ca. 1889 - ca. 1893

    Consists of 88 trade cards produced for the Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Co.

    Trade cards, ca.1876 - ca.1889

    Trade cards for many businesses including advertisements from the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and the Paris Universal Exhibition. Some trade cards have unique shapes like fans.

    World's Columbian Exposition collection, 1892 - 1893

    These trade cards are part of the World's Columbian Exposition collection.
